Are you already doing something that matters?
Are you considering a career as a Dutch teacher in secondary education? Have you not studied Dutch, but are you motivated to delve firmly into the subject matter? Then this tailor-made programme is a serious option for you.

Job requirements

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) offers a tailor-made program to prepare people to become first- or second-grade teachers of the Dutch subject. This program is intended for professionals who:
  • Possession of a master's or doctoral degree (WO) in a field where a lot of work is done with language (think of programs such as: Communication, Journalism, Philosophy, History) in order to be able to follow a path leading to first-degree teaching qualifications. (With only an undergraduate degree in WO, there is the possibility of following a path leading to second-degree teaching qualifications.)
  • be willing to invest up to three years in an education.
  • Immediately want to be in the classroom to pass on knowledge to a new generation and want to contribute to good education
  • It makes sense to work with teenagers.
Even if you are already a teacher with a teaching qualification in another school subject, and a prior education as described above, you are more than welcome.

Employment conditions

The benefits of this lateral entry route:
  • You can start for the class in year 1 or in year 2.
  • If required, the UvA offers support in finding a small paid job (0.2 fte = two half-days).
  • The subject content is integrated into the training program and is followed through Alfa4all and Masterlanguage.
  • In February 2027 you can already start with subject-specific courses; the UvA will start the training in September 2027.
  • The school where you will be employed can apply for the lateral entry grant that will pay for the training.
  • If desired, the programme can be combined with another job (of up to 2 working days), allowing you to make a partial or gradual transition to teaching.
