Atlas College is looking for the location OSG West-Friesland in Hoorn a Lecturer Classical Languages.
  • 0.7 FTE (16 hours)
  • First-degree qualification
  • Start date: 1 August 2026
  • Temporary contract with a view to a permanent position

Enthusiasm. That's what our pupils love. With your energy, you'll captivate them, engage them, and help them progress. It’s not just the pupils who will shine from that – you will too. It’s satisfying knowing that ‘your’ pupils enjoy coming to your lessons, feel safe, and feel seen. Everyone is different, and you see that as a good thing.

What will you do?
As a teacher of Greek and Latin, you teach pupils in both the lower and upper years of the grammar school. You know how to convey your passion for classical languages and tailor your lessons to the pupils' world, without losing sight of the content.
You have an eye for what works in the classroom: you improvise where necessary, provide structure where desired, and thus contribute to a pleasant and stimulating learning environment. Classical languages are a distinctive part of the gymnasium curriculum. Therefore, you bring a clear vision, which is visible in your lessons and in your collaboration with colleagues.
In addition to teaching, you actively contribute to the broader academic and pedagogical development of the grammar school.

Inspiring and challenging education
We work with the teaching methods Pallas (Greek), Disco (Latin) and Forum, with plenty of scope for our own materials and creative input. You will use activating and differentiating didactics to enable pupils to understand, analyse and give meaning to texts, drawing from the classical world as well as their own everyday lives.
Cultural topics also receive plenty of attention, for example through creative and cross-curricular assignments. You challenge pupils to look at classical antiquity in a different way.
In addition to regular lessons, we organise projects and excursions for all year groups, both inside and outside the school. These include visits to the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, the Rome trip, and cross-curricular projects like Archimedes (with mathematics) or Purcell's Dido and Aeneas (with music).

Working in a strong and committed team
You are part of the Classics and Culture department and will work closely with passionate colleagues. You will be provided with a workspace in a beautiful, historic school, with room 301 as the beating heart of the grammar school. Thanks to the small scale of the department, communication lines are short, and you will have ample opportunity to play an active role in the development of the department and the grammar school.

What do you bring?
  • Enthusiasm and passion for classical languages
  • Strong subject matter expertise and didactic skill
  • Enjoyment in collaboration and the ability to contribute critically and constructively.
  • The ambition to help build the further development of the profession and the gymnasium education.

Ideally, you will hold a first-degree teaching qualification. We also warmly encourage applications from those who are close to qualifying or are still studying.

What does your appreciation look like?
This role is valued at scale LB. The CAO VO also offers attractive secondary benefits, such as an excellent leave scheme, a generous (tax) exchange facility and a semi-collective disability insurance. Naturally, we invest in your professional development. New colleagues are mentored by our NAP team (newly appointed personnel team).

About Atlas College | OSG West-Friesland

School portrait

OSG West-Friesland offers education at mavo, havo, technasium, atheneum and gymnasium level. Would you like to work in an environment where you are challenged to get the best out of yourself, where you can be yourself and where your opinion really matters? Then the OSG is the school for you.

In the middle of Hoorn you will find the OSG's characteristic, historic building. We work according to four key core values.

Together
At the OSG, we believe it is important to do things together. Students, parents and staff work together to ensure that the OSG is a positive and stimulating learning and living environment. This allows you to get the best out of yourself and everyone feels recognised, seen and appreciated. We strive for a high degree of openness and respect between teachers, pupils and educational support staff.

Cultural
Creative subjects occupy an important place at the OSG. Just like art and culture in general. We like to make you curious about other people's creative, unusual ideas and how they apply these ideas. But we find it just as important that you find your own, original solutions to issues. Not only in art subjects, but also in all other subjects, we encourage you to use your imagination.

Quirky
At the OSG, we want you to learn to be curious, independent, positively critical and to form and substantiate your own opinions. We give you space to think independently, encourage you to think outside the box and we like to hear your opinions. At the OSG we are open to your ideas, we encourage you and offer you the space to carry out your own plans if necessary. As a school we assume your own identity, your own background and your own emotions: there is a place for everyone at the OSG.

Enquiry
At the OSG, we think education only really succeeds when you ask yourself things, are curious, are able to explore independently and find answers to your questions.

The OSG is part of the Atlas College school group. For a more comprehensive picture of our school, please refer to our website: www.osgwestfriesland.nl
