Employment conditions

Working at SVOK: what can you expect?

At SVOK, we believe that good education starts with motivated staff. That is why we invest in a professional working environment, provide room for growth and offer attractive employment conditions. Whether you are at the front of the classroom or fulfilling support roles, with us you receive the appreciation, support and development opportunities you need to do your work with enjoyment.

Sustainable employability is a top priority for us. At SVOK, we have developed a vision on this. At least two themed meetings are organised each school year; recent meetings have focused on the transition to work, informal care and work, and coping with loss and work. Staff can also assess their own ability to work by taking part in a survey. Based on the results of the survey, SVOK seeks to identify interventions to optimise staff’s ability to work. We aim to provide everyone with the support they need to remain healthy and motivated at work.

The terms and conditions of employment at SVOK

At SVOK, you fall under the secondary education (VO) collective labour agreement. Some employment conditions are already very well arranged within the collective labour agreement. In addition, SVOK offers a number of supplementary employment conditions. Below you will find an overview of what we offer you:
  • A good basic salary
Depending on your role, you will be in the LB, LC or LD scale for teachers, or for educational support staff (OOP) in scales 1 to 15. The salary scales and corresponding amounts can be found in the collective labour agreement.
  • 8% holiday pay
Holiday pay is accrued monthly and paid out in May.
  • 8.33% year-end bonus
The year-end bonus is accrued monthly and paid out in December.
  • October allowance of €1,640
The educational support staff (OOP) in pay scales 1 up to and including 8 are entitled to an October allowance of €1,640 (pro rata for part-timers). Teachers and educational support staff from pay scale 9 onwards will receive this October allowance as soon as they are at the top step of their scale, and will receive an October allowance of €302.50 until they reach the final scale. The allowance is accrued monthly and paid out annually in October.
  • 90 hours per year individual choice budget (individual holiday entitlement)
You are entitled to 90 IKB (Individual Choice Budget) hours per year. These hours can be used to make choices that positively contribute to long-term employability. The hours can also be saved/paid out (in part).
  • Group disability insurance
If you are receiving a WGA benefit after two years of incapacity for work, you don't need to worry about your income. SVOK has taken out a disability insurance policy for all employees that prevents a significant drop in income. You pay 50% of the premium.
  • ABP pension
The ABP is one of the largest pension funds in the Netherlands. The premium you see on your payslip is only 30% of the amount actually paid into your pension. SVOK pays 70% of the pension premium.
  • Possibility of purchasing a bicycle
SVOK places great value on sustainability and vitality. All employees are therefore given the opportunity to purchase an (electric) bicycle so that their daily commute can be made CO2-neutral. The budget for purchasing a bicycle is €1,500 and can be used once every five years.
  • Professionalisation your way
Whether you're at the start of your career or have years of experience: through the SVOK Academy, you can make use of a wide range of training sessions, workshops, meetings, and e-learnings. From in-depth professional development to personal growth, everything is geared towards helping you get the most out of yourself. You'll get access to a learning platform where you can learn at your own pace. Whatever your learning needs may be, at SVOK we're happy to think with you about how you can achieve them.
  • A travel expense allowance
As soon as you live at least 8 kilometres from your work you receive a travel allowance of 0.19 cents per kilometre. After 12 months the mileage allowance is capped at 35 kilometres for a single journey. That is offset by an attractive relocation expenses scheme and a fiscal exchange scheme. The latter ensures that you have a considerable tax advantage on every kilometre you travel for your commute.
  • Various leave arrangements
Situations that require a good work-life balance often involve leave. The collective labour agreement (CLA) pays ample attention to this, both for parents with children in the form of parental leave, and for seniors (57+) who can structurally reduce their working hours while maintaining pension accrual. For senior leave, holiday pay, year-end bonus, and October allowance are also accrued as if no leave were being taken. In addition, the CLA includes many situations involving short-term leave.
  • Last but not least: free during the school holidays
Perhaps the most attractive employee benefit of working in education is being free during the school holidays. Everyone on holiday at the same time, which means no overflowing inbox after your break. In which other sector is this conceivable?
If you are enthusiastic about (the schools of) SVOK, we would love to hear from you!

About Castor College

Het Castor College is a comprehensive school offering MAVO, HAVO, Atheneum, and Gymnasium levels, with its central promise: "We see you!" We work together daily to fulfil this promise: everyone – pupils, teachers, and support staff – contributes to ensuring you feel seen, known, and taken seriously within our school community. we see diversity as a strength; every pupil is welcome, can be themselves, and is given the space to grow according to their abilities and ambitions.

We are developing a contemporary curriculum step by step, in which, in addition to regular subject lessons, there is also room for cross-curricular and project-based work. In our lessons, we consciously integrate citizenship, so that pupils not only acquire knowledge but also learn to think critically, collaborate, take responsibility and find their place in a diverse society. In the coming years, we want the experience of “We see you” to be felt even more strongly in all these components.
Our school is at the beginning of an inspiring development period. With Groeikracht from Stichting Leerkracht, we are working together on a professional culture in which collaboration, ownership, and continuous improvement are becoming increasingly self-evident. As a team, we are curious, we want to learn, and we explore together what works in the classroom. We experiment, give each other feedback, and build better education step by step – with enjoyment and with impact, always with “We see you” as our guiding compass for the coming year.

Collaboration is essential in this. Every teacher is a (dual) mentor and regularly consults with mentors of the same year group. In addition, we work in subject departments, clusters, and projects such as vwo+, language and numeracy skills, and internationalisation. We actively involve both colleagues and students in new developments; students participate in thinking and doing within committees and projects, so they too are co-creators of a school where you feel seen.

We believe in everyone's potential for growth, allowing for mistakes, and being able to address each other respectfully throughout the entire school. As a training school, we consciously invest in the development of (new) colleagues through guidance, coaching, lesson observations, and peer support. In this way, we strive to achieve the same for our staff as for our students: We see you – and we will continue to build on that together, even more explicitly next year, every single day.
