Are you interested in examining and can you test with an open mind whether the examination board or education has reached the right decision? Then we would like to invite you to apply for this challenging and varied role. There are 2 vacancies at Talland College as a member of the Examination Appeals Board (COBEX).
The role
The COBEX is a committee that independently decides on an appeal case filed by a student. If a student disagrees with a decision made by the education system, an examination committee or examiner, he/she can file an appeal with the COBEX. The COBEX then reviews whether the decision was made on the right grounds. Students can appeal against certain decisions, e.g. decisions on exemptions, the binding study advice, fraud, the assessment of an exam or an application rejected by the examination board.
A member of the COBEX, together with other committee members, reviews appeal cases filed by students. You bring independent expertise to test whether decisions of the education or examination board have been made on correct grounds. You are involved in jointly forming an opinion and reaching the verdict after the hearing. A committee member is not involved in appeal cases from his/her own education sector to ensure the independence of the committee.
On average, a committee member is involved in seven hearings per year. There are periods in the year when there are more hearings, for example around the period of admissions. Prior to the hearing, you are given timely access to the documents; after the hearing, the committee collectively forms its opinion.
About the team
The COBEX consists of six members and the secretary. Depending on whether appeals have been filed, the committee meets. When an appeal has been filed, it first considers whether a settlement can take place between the two parties, if not a hearing follows.
