P. Thijsse College and the world around us
The Jac. P. Thijsse College is a school community of 1700 pupils with vmbo, havo, and vwo (pre-university) levels in Kennemerland, with regional appeal. It is a school with an international profile, bilingual education, and a community-oriented character:“Active and committed”.

This is how we view the world around us. And in this world, we currently identify three major trends that we want to address in our school plan. We believe that these developments are decisive for our students. These are social, international, and technological developments. In this chapter, we will briefly describe these developments.

Social
A socially strong and safe school climate contributes to the well-being and development of pupils. In a world where social dynamics and cooperation are becoming increasingly important, it is essential that pupils are not only knowledgeable but also emotionally and socially resilient. This helps them to deal with different perspectives, take responsibility, and show engagement with their surroundings.
We place a systematic focus on social skills, empathy and citizenship. By encouraging collaboration and dialogue, we create an inclusive learning environment in which all pupils feel heard and valued. Striking a balance between academic achievement and
well-being is central to this: we challenge pupils to achieve their full potential, whilst at the same time being mindful of their social and emotional needs. This not only contributes to their individual development, but also to a school culture
in which solidarity and mutual connection are second nature. In this sense, we view the school as a community.

International
The world is constantly changing and geopolitical developments have a direct impact on society and the future of our pupils. Knowledge of international relations, societal issues and the dynamics of globalisation helps them to think critically and make informed choices as engaged citizens.
We integrate geopolitical and social issues into our teaching to give pupils an understanding of the world around them. By exposing them to diverse perspectives and current developments, they develop a broad outlook and learn
to think in a nuanced way. This not only fosters critical citizenship, but also an awareness of the influence they themselves can exert within a wider social context.

Technology
Technology is an integral part of society, influencing how we work, learn and live. Pupils must not only be skilled users but also be able to engage critically and responsibly with digital developments. Digital literacy and knowledge of AI are fundamental for their future and contribute to equal opportunities. To prepare pupils for this, we are weaving technology and AI into education. We offer a learning environment where they not only apply technology but also understand and question it. This helps them to be media-wise, recognise ethical dilemmas, and act responsibly in a digital world. Furthermore, we support teachers in integrating digital skills into their lessons, so that technology is not a standalone subject but a natural part of the learning process.

Our mission
The Jac. P. Thijsse College prepares students for a constantly changing world in which social, geopolitical, and technological developments play a significant role.
